12-17-2007 Weekly Update #4

Weekly Update

Every week to two weeks, we will post our weekly update that will provide information on what we are working on, the upcoming schedule of events, and where each girl will be playing. Although this is outlined in advance, we appreciate your understanding that circumstances will sometimes require us to be flexible and deviate from our original assignments and schedule.

Current Focus

This week we will continue to work on offensive and defensive schemes. Our defense has continued to improve. We’ve seen more ball pressure (but need to force our opponent to their weakness) and better denial position. We must continue to jump to ball more (on deny and help position) to make it more difficult for our opponent to move the ball. Our help defense is much better. We sill need to improve “vision” on the ball and our person we are guarding. We are beginning to make contact when boxing out, but must push back more and box out every time rather than once in a while. We have been (and will continue to) focus on shooting in practice resulting in a more aggressive offensive approach to scoring. Although the shots have not fallen as much as our team would like, we are definitely creating more scoring opportunities. We continue to spend more time working on developing fundamental skills than learning plays as that will help our players to compete at a higher level. That being said, we will review our offense and continue to emphasize the importance of running an offense.

Each week we focus on developing shooting (including layups), ball handling and passing skills. Players will participate in the free-throw ladder. We always work on transition, emphasizing the fast break. We will reinforce boxing out and defensive position. And we will use daily game situations (controlled 5 on 5) to reinforce all skills and schemes taught. We have seen steady improvement thanks to the hard work and coachability of our players.

Current Roster

We expect to make some changes to the current roster (A, Shared, B designations) later this week.

Although this is outlined in advance, we appreciate your understanding that circumstances will sometimes require us to be flexible and deviate from our original assignments and schedule.

Current Focus

This week we will continue to work on offensive and defensive schemes. Defensively, we continue to improve—we are jumping to ball more (on deny and help position) but still not enough. We need to do a better job of getting our hand in the passing lane in deny position and pressuring the ball (at the moment, our opponent easily moves the ball on the perimeter). Our “vision” is better but we still lose the ball at times. We will review our 1-2-2 full court defense (fist) and work to get in proper position on our zone press break (overlaod). When we are in proper position on the press break and focus on beating pressure with the pass, we do some really good things. We continue to spend more time working on developing fundamental skills than learning plays as that will help our players to compete at a higher level. That being said, we will review our offense and continue to emphasize the importance of running an offense.

Friday is PICTURE DAY!

On Friday, Buck's parents will be taking pictures of our team before our game vs. Shakopee. This is a time to do some fun buddy shots and cool poses! We'll also do a team picture. The team should decide at practice today what they want to wear (it's up to you).

You won't be ordering these pictures, but you will get a cool 9th Grade Girls' Basketball souvenir at the end of the season. (Check out Buck's wall.)

Want a Permission?

Want to earn a permission? Here's how:

During today's practice (Tuesday), when we run for free throws, DON'T run. Even if you get 3, don't run at 3. Just stay at the baseline.

For every 5 players who remain on the baseline during this activity, the team will earn a permission.

The question is, will any player read this in time for practice . . .

GOOD LUCK!

12-12-2007 Game @ Minnetonka Info

Just a quick reminder that our game at Minnetonka that was originally scheduled for Thursday, December 13 has been changed to Wednesday, December 12. Although we encourage our players to ride the bus home, those who have other typical Wednesday commitments will be excused. Just let me or Andi know. Thanks.

12-5-2007 Pictures

David Banks Studios will be taking our 9th grade team picture (one team) and any individuals that you would like during practice on Wednesday, December 5 at VVMS. Picture envelopes were handed out at Tuesday's practice. Bring them with you on Wednesday. Wear your green uniforms and make sure you look nice! :-)

HOT SHOTS Kudos to Our Players

I sent out an email to the HOT SHOTS parents for any remaining t-shirt size requests. Here is one response that I received:
We don't need a t-shirt, but wanted to let you know that my daughter loves the Hot Shots clinic. She's in 1st grade, so this is her first exposure to the sport (her Grandpa is thrilled he might have a grandchild who likes basketball). She likes it so much, that she informed me that the paint I just bought for her room isn't the color she wants anymore, she wants Edina green and then she thought it would be nice to have a hoop in her bedroom!!!

I continue to receive numerous comments and emails like this. A huge THANK YOU to our 9th grade players for their efforts with our Hornet HOT SHOTS! You are the ones who make the difference!!!

12-3-2007 Weekly Update #2

Weekly Update

Although this is outlined in advance, we appreciate your understanding that circumstances will sometimes require us to be flexible and deviate from our original assignments and schedule.

Current Focus

This week we will continue to work on offensive and defensive schemes. Defensively, we’ve improved but are continuing to emphasize pressure on the ball, jump to the ball, on-ball, deny and help position. We will review our 1-2-2 full court defense and possibly add a wrinkle to the press. Offensively, we will focus on the 4 out/1 in offense and one or two set plays as well as review our basic inbounds plays and offensive and defensive alignment for the initial jump ball. We’re encouraging offensive discipline in trying to get our players to run through the plays. Good things happen when we run the offense.
